Foods and Drinks That Cause Baby Fussiness While Breastfeeding

Baby FussyBreastfeeding is a wonderful experience for women who get to do it. Eating foods that were big problems during pregnancy is great too. However, sometimes the two don't work well together. Why is this? What a woman eats and drinks and takes for medicine does indeed affect the breast milk.

Breast milk Flavors

Some babies appear to enjoy the breast milk that has a different flavor to it every now and then. Now while some babies may enjoy the change, others are not so fond of it and get fussy. If, as a woman, this ends up happening, stop eating that food until you are done breast-feeding.

Common Agitators

Are there foods that stand out as common contributors to finicky breastfeeding babies? In fact, there are. One food in particular causes some women to cringe when they realize they can't have it for a while. This is chocolate. These women must have chocolate on a daily basis but find they have to give it up for the baby. Others are citrus fruits such as oranges, limes, lemons and grapefruits, vegetables that cause gas for an adult (It can also cause gas for the baby which make them fussy), chili (especially that of the spicy variety), spices, garlic and even fruits like prunes and cherries which offer a laxative effect.

What about Caffeine?

Yes, it is fine to have a cup, maybe two of coffee a day. Although too much of a good thing can be bad for the baby. Caffeine can upset a baby's sleep. In turn, this makes them fussy. Where else is caffeine found? It is found in soda (though there are caffeine free sodas), tea (you can have decaffeinated) and some medicines bought in stores as well.

Alcohol

While most women prefer not to drink at all when they are breast-feeding, some like to have on every once in a while. However, drinking more than one glass can put alcohol in the breast milk because it will raise the alcohol level in the blood.

If you plan to go out and drink, try to wait two or more hours before doing any nursing per alcohol drink you have had. If the breasts seem full and it is time for the baby to eat, unless you know it is safe to do so, pump and dump the milk. Do not do any heavy drinking.

It is best for breastfeeding mothers to ask for a doctor's advice before they omit any foods. By doing this, it can cause an imbalance in the nutrition a woman needs. Women can also talk to a nutritionist at Women, Infant and Children (WIC) programs if they have concerns or questions.

1 month baby fussy during feeding?
Just today, my little guy has been so fussy when he's eating (thus not eating very much at a time). He'll latch on really well, and eat for a minute or 2, and then pull back and scream! Sometimes, I'll burp him and re-try, and he'll eat for another minute and pull away screaming again. He has gotten similac sensitive about 2 week before, never got problem before.. (He's always eaten well from the bottle, and was doing well b/f after the bottles until tonight).

My 10 week old has had this for over a week now, and is just about to start Diflucan. The Nystatin did not work. She has been pretty fussy, and I'm wondering if this does in fact hurt her mouth. Thanks everyone. Thanks for your answers. I was wondering why her voice was sounding hoarse, and now I know...

How can I make my husband understand breastfeeding?
When my baby was a newborn I had latching on problems to the Point where my baby became frustrated, I kept trying to breastfeed different ways and reading helpful books until my husband said I was obsessed with it and I'm just making the baby fussy. I stopped breastfeeding pumped my milk and gave formula instead. I became depressed because I felt I had no support. Now he thinks I should stop pumping because "it's taking alot of my time and I'm just being obsessed." I feel this is important to me and baby. How do I make him understand? Am I doing wrong?
